Singapore Visit

Thursday 22nd June 2006

During May I was fortunate enough to attend the 3rd National Disease Management Conference in Singapore. Chronic disease management was the focus of the conference and there were many excellent presentations addressing the need to transform systems, shift providers and change patient behaviors. The conference highlighted the reality that we are facing a dual world crisis chronic disease and obesity. The common theme running through almost every presentation was the absolute importance of the GP/family physician. Also emphasised was the multidisciplinary team approach, an increased emphasis on self management and the need for the shift to primary care.

As well as attending the conference I was fortunate enough to spend a day visiting .Hospital and a near by Polyclinic as a guest of the National Healthcare Group (NHG). The NHG is a not-for-profit, government-owned integrated healthcare delivery system in Singapore that manages 3 acute care general hospitals and a chain of 9 primary healthcare clinics (polyclinics) serving about 2.2 million people. 20% of the GPs work in polyclinics with the remaining 80% working privately.

GPs in Singapore find themselves at the epicenter of upheavals in chronic disease management. Faced with limited resources and rising expectations the challenges they face are formidable. Dr Lee Kheng Hock, the Executive Director of the College of Family Physicians in Singapore, stated that the effectiveness of chronic disease management will depend very much on finding the most effective ways of empowering the family physician.

Overall, disease management programs internationally are redirecting attention to focus on prevention. We are told that 75% of chronic disease is a result of unhealthy lifestyle and is preventable.

Many thanks to Southern Health for providing me with the opportunity to attend the conference I did manage to fit in some sight seeing and, more importantly, shopping!
